Chemotherapy hair loss

Hair loss is the most obvious side effect of chemotherapy. Most people who undergo chemotherapy experience considerable hair loss, hence emotional turmoil:when hair falls, out self-esteem plummets. For a full head of hair symbolizes vitality, attractiveness and self-confidence. If you are confronted with this, you need to consider what would be the best thing to do about it. This brief support page for chemotherapy hair loss will assist you in dealing with hair loss and help you to find the solution that is best for you.

Why does chemotherapy cause hair loss?

Cancer cells are known to divide frequently. This is what causes cancer to spread and to travel. Chemotherapy is designed to target frequently dividing cells and to inhibit their dividing mechanism. Simply stated, chemotherapy inhibits the reproduction of cancer cells. Hair cells are also known to divide frequently, which makes hair grow. Unfortunately, chemotherapy does not differentiate between frequently dividing cancer cells and frequently dividing hair cells. Therefore, chemotherapy is as effective at arresting the development and reproduction of hair cells as it is with cancer cells, which results in significant hair loss. Patients ordinarily experience new hair growth in only one to two months after completing chemotherapy.

Finding the best hair replacement solution

Today, a variety of options are available to those who experience hair loss from chemotherapy:

  1. doing nothing, and waiting for the hair to grow back;
  2. wearing a stylish headscarf, hat or cap; or
  3. donning a wig to either mimic one’s current hairstyle or transition into a hip new hairstyle.

This support page will focus on this third option and help you to decide what type of wig will work best for you. Wigs are available in almost every hairstyle and color. To perform properly, a wig must appear natural and feel comfortable, and its attachments must be secure. When choosing a hairstyle for your wig, consider the styling and maintenance required to keep it fresh and new-looking. As a rule, the longer the hair, the greater the care requirements.

Also, consider whether your wig’s hair should be human or synthetic. Human hair boasts a more natural look and touch but always requires more care to style it to your needs and to keep it styled properly. So synthetic hair wigs are typically recommended for temporary hair replacement. Moreover, premium synthetic hair closely resembles human hair, due to vastly improved fibers resulting from state of the art technology.

For this reason, this support page for chemotherapy patients focuses on our BERGMANN READY-TO-WEAR collection, especially our synthetic hair wigs.

Give yourself time to prepare for hair loss before you begin chemotherapy. The best time to choose a BERGMANN READY-TO-WEAR wig is when your hair is still growing normally before your treatments begin, or after your first treatment at the very latest.

Alopecia hair loss

Especially for women, hair is an important part of the total self-image. Often, however, beautiful full heads of hair are taken for granted. Imagine waking up one day to find a clump of hair on your pillow or your hairstylist informing you of bald patches on your scalp. This can be caused by a condition known as Alopecia Areata. According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, this highly unpredictable auto-immune skin disease, which results in the loss of hair on the scalp and sometimes elsewhere on the body, usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth patches.

Over 6.6 million people in the United States and 147 million worldwide have, had or will develop Alopecia Areata at some point in their lives. The disease affects significantly more females than males. Alopecia Areata can occur in people who may have no other health or skin issues and often first appears in late childhood or young adulthood. The condition is not contagious; it often occurs in people who have affected family members, suggesting that it is hereditary.

Alopecia comes in many forms:

  • Alopecia Areata, which involves hair loss in one or more round spots on the scalp;
  • Alopecia Totalis, in which the person loses all hair on the scalp; and
  • Alopecia Universalis, in which the person loses all body hair.

Fortunately, those who suffer from Alopecia Areata do not need to sacrifice their self-image and style due to the many hair replacement options available today. Women who have lost only a patch or two of hair may opt for partial hairpieces to replace just the areas they have lost. For women with Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis, however, investing in a high-quality wig or extension hairpiece can be their salvation.

If you are hesitant to wear a wig because you may think it can look phony, BERGMANN offers hair replacement options that are indiscernible from your natural hair on its best day. While 100% natural human hair wigs cost more than their cheaper counterparts, they are truly a fine long-term investment for women with Alopecia. They give the wearer a natural look and can be washed and styled throughout their long lifetime with proper care.

Women with Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis are concerned with not only quality of appearance, but also secure, comfortable fits on their heads. Some wigs and hairpieces traditionally clip into some of your existing hair, but women with Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis obviously do not have that choice. One option for them is a BERGMANN custom-made wig from the LUXURY WIG collection with the Totalis cap, which was made for those who prefer no tape or glue on their scalp, yet crave lightness, breathability, all day use and, above all, natural, beautiful hair. Another option from the LUXURY WIG collection is the Dermasilk Cap—the most premium wig in the BERGMANN portfolio—combining ultimate comfort with the most beautiful look.

Although Alopecia Areata is a devastating disease that can strike a woman at any time, please know that if you or any of your loved ones are afflicted by the condition, you still have options to ensure that you never lose your confidence and can continue to show off your beautiful hair!

Trichotillomania hair loss

Trichotillomania is a disorder that involves recurrent, irresistible urges to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body, despite trying to stop. Hair-pulling from the scalp often leaves patchy bald spots, which causes significant distress and can interfere with normal social or work activity. For some, trichotillomania may be mild and generally manageable. For others, the compulsive urge to pull hair is overwhelming. A wig or partial hairpiece can cover the hair loss.

If the hair loss is minimal, BERGMANN offers premium partial hairpieces producing overall volume and amazing length.If you experience more extensive hair loss, any of our wigs from the READY-TO-WEAR or LUXURY WIG collections can help you to look beautiful and feel self-confident again. Our finest-quality medical-grade wigs give women the self-confidence they need to carry on active social and professional lives while keeping their hair loss private.

Unlike fashion wigs found in retail stores or at the mall, BERGMANN wigs offer premium hair solutions ensuring the most beautiful look, natural hair movement and comfortable fit. Our certified quality standards in cap design and material selection prevent sensitive scalp irritation, which is a typical issue with most of the fashion wigs on the market.

Androgenic hair loss

Androgenetic Alopecia is a common form of hair loss in both men and women. In men, this condition is also known as male-pattern baldness. Hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning above both temples. Over time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic "M" shape. Hair also thins at the crown (near the top of the head), often progressing to partial or complete baldness.

The pattern of hair loss in women differs from male-pattern baldness. In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede. Androgenetic alopecia in women rarely leads to total baldness.

BERGMANN offers hair replacement options for Androgenic Hair loss for both women and men. These replacements are indiscernible from the natural hair on its best day. While 100% natural human hair wigs and hairpieces cost more than their cheaper counterparts, they are truly a sound long-term investment for women and men with Androgenic Alopecia. They give the wearer the most natural look and can be washed and styled to your individual needs throughout their long lifetime, with proper care.

For women, the BERGMANN Dermasilk Deluxe Wig from our BERGMANN LUXURY WIG collection brings a new form of realism, from the “French Drawn”skin part to BERGMANN’s premium human hair selection. This wig is best suited to women wearing added hair for work or fashion, or as a beautiful remedy for androgenic thinning, diffuse hair loss, or thin or thinning hair.

Thyroid hair loss

Severe and prolonged hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause hair loss. The loss is diffuse and involves the entire scalp rather than discrete areas. The hair appears uniformly sparse. Regrowth is possible with successful treatment of the thyroid disorder, though it will take several months and may be incomplete. It is unusual for mild (e.g. subclinical) hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, or short-lived thyroid problems, to cause hair loss.

Some forms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism occur abruptly and are diagnosed early, while others may have been present for months or years before diagnosis. Hair loss due to thyroid disease becomes apparent several months after the onset of thyroid disease, due to the long hair cycle. In such cases, paradoxically the hair loss may follow the treatment for the thyroid and the thyroid medication may be erroneously blamed, leading to withdrawal of treatment, which in turn may worsen the hair loss.

Most cases of scalp and eyebrow hair loss caused by thyroid disorders are temporary, but it may take several months for the medication to stimulate your hair to regrow.
